BUNGALOW SPOTLIGHT: SAILOR JERRY

"Bold simplicity is the keynote to good design."
- Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins - 1970

The Bungalow life at Pacific Edge Hotel continues with our latest design by California Native Erin King to celebrate the Sailor Jerry brand!

While we’re sure your familiar with the spirit, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, this Bungalow celebrates the life and style of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, father of the old-school tattoo. Back in the 1920s, when most Americans were chasing the American Dream, Collins sought a life of freedom and wanderlust and left home to travel the country, hitchhiking and train hopping. It was during these adventures that Norman took to his craft and began working the needle and ink to create designs freehand…one poke at a time. After meeting and working with famed-artist Gib “Tatts” Thomas in Chicago and joining the Navy where he developed his lifelong love for ships, Collins settled in Honolulu and built his legacy tattooing sailors, inevitably becoming, “Sailor Jerry.”

Designer Erin King was inspired by the freedom and individuality of old-school beach, tiki and surf culture as a way of life, including surfboards, motorcycles, hot rods, tattoos, guitars, and beach bbqs. And since Jerry tattooed in Hawaii when tiki culture became huge, she made this Bungalow a tiki lodge – bringing island past into the beach present.

Of course the Bungalow style is retro-beach chic and includes a 1960s pinball machine, art that pays homage to the Sailor Jerry aesthetic and a tiki bar to craft cocktails with the famous spiced-rum! Ahoy mateys!
